The superior peroneal retinaculum (SPR) functions as the primary restraint to peroneal tendon subluxation and is also a secondary restraint to anterolateral ankle instability. It is formed from a confluence of the common peroneal sheath and the superficial fascia of the leg.

The fibular retinacula (also known as peroneal retinacula) are fibrous retaining bands that bind down the tendons of the fibularis longus and fibularis brevis muscles as they run across the side of the ankle.

Subluxation or dislocation of the peroneal tendons is a disorder involving an elongation, a tear, or an avulsion of the superior peroneal retinaculum.
