Protozoa include both autotrophs and heterotrophs. They include free-living and parasitic forms. Cilia also used for feeding in many small metazoans. There are about 45,000 protozoan species; around 8000 are parasitic, and around 25 species are important to humans.

Protozoa are microscopic unicellular eukaryotes that have a relatively complex internal structure and carry out complex metabolic activities. Some protozoa have structures for propulsion or other types of movement. On the basis of light and electron microscopic morphology, the protozoa are currently classified into six phyla.

Studying the biology of a model parasitic protozoan can therefore provide insight into the basic biology of eukaryotes (whose cells contain a nucleus, as distinct from bacteria and archaebacteria). Studying these organisms also provides insight into host-parasite interactions and mechanisms of pathogenesis.
