As the name implies, the Start Event indicates where a particular Process will start. In terms of Sequence Flows, the Start Event starts the flow of the Process, and thus, will not have any incoming Sequence Flows—no Sequence Flow can connect to a Start Event.

BPMN 2.0 introduced a completely new construct, the event subprocess. We locate an event subprocess within another process or subprocess. Recognize them by their dotted-line frames. A single start event always triggers an event subprocess, and this can only happen while the enclosing process or subprocess remains active.

Start and End events. A start event indicates where a process starts. The start event starts the flow of the process and does not have any incoming flows but can have a trigger. An end event ends a process flow and therefore does not have outgoing flow paths.

The process diagram must be in released status for a message start event to be successful. Promoting a model to released state creates a message subscription for the start event. A start event can be in its own diagram, or can be in an additional BPMN Pool to a diagram containing a normal start event.
