2024年5月13日 · Every summer scientists travel deep into the mountains of Tajikistan, hiking up to altitudes of nearly 15,000 feet and carrying supplies by donkey, to solve mysteries about the world’s glaciers. On a sunny summer day two years ago, a massive chunk of ice broke off from a glacier on a mountain in the Central Asian country of Kyrgyzstan.

There are more than 8,000 glaciers with the area of 8.5 thousand sq. km. in Tajikistan. The most famous are Pamirs plateau, Garmo glacier, Bivachni glacier, Fedchenko glacier, Great Sauqdara, Uisu.

On December 14, 2022, the UN General Assembly at its 77th session unanimously adopted the resolution “2025 – International Year of Glacier Preservation” proposed by the Republic of Tajikistan, supported by 153 UN Member States.
