A pneumothorax refers to an abnormal collection of air or gas in the pleural space that causes a loss of negative pressure. Like pleural effusion (liquid buildup in that space), pneumothorax may interfere with normal breathing. Pneumothorax can either be traumatic, or spontaneous.
