The tricoloured munia (Lonchura malacca) is an estrildid finch, native to Bangladesh, [2] India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, and southern China. The species has also been introduced to the Caribbean, in Trinidad, Jamaica, Hispaniola, Puerto Rico, Cuba, and Venezuela. This species, like the chestnut munia has been known as the black-headed munia.

Small, finchlike bird of weedy and grassy areas in tropical lowlands. Often in small flocks, which associate readily with seedeaters and grassquits. Adult is handsome and striking with rusty upperparts. Black head and underparts are cut by a broad white swath from flanks across the lower breast. Note stout gray bill.

It is most common in and near swamps, flooded meadows, riversides, rice fields and other moist, open habitats. The Black-Headed Munia was long considered to be a subspecies of the Tri-Colored, but has now been designated as a distinct species.
