Trichophyton verrucosum, commonly known as the cattle ringworm fungus, is a dermatophyte largely responsible for fungal skin disease in cattle, but is also a common cause of ringworm in donkeys, dogs, goat, sheep, and horses. [1]

Trichophyton verrucosum is the usual cause of ringworm in cattle, but T mentagrophytes, T equinum, Microsporum gypseum, M nanum, M canis, and others have been isolated. Dermatophytosis is most commonly recognized in calves, in which nonpruritic periocular lesions are most characteristic, although generalized skin disease may develop.

Trichophyton verrucosum is a zoophilic fungus causing ringworm in cattle. Infections in humans result from direct contact with cattle or infected fomites and are usually highly inflammatory involving the scalp, beard or exposed areas of the body.

Trichophyton verrucosum is the most common pathogen, with less frequent instances of Trichophyton mentagrophytes and other dermatophytes. Calves older than 2 months of age through yearling stage are most commonly affected.

Dermatophytosis, caused by Trichophyton verrucosum, is a disease that affects many spp of livestock and occurs as an acute or chronic skin disease (Svejgaard, 1986; Chermette et al., 2008).

A new medium for the early detection and identification of Trichophyton verrucosum has been formulated. The key ingredients of the medium are 4% casein and 0.5% yeast extract. T. verrucosum is recognized by its early hydrolysis of casein and very slow growth.
