Vanadium(V) oxide (vanadia) is the inorganic compound with the formula V 2 O 5. Commonly known as vanadium pentoxide, it is a dark yellow solid, although when freshly precipitated from aqueous solution, its colour is deep orange. Because of its high oxidation state, it is both an amphoteric oxide and an oxidizing agent.

The sulphur dioxide is oxidised to sulphur trioxide by the vanadium(V) oxide. In the process, the vanadium(V) oxide is reduced to vanadium(IV) oxide. The vanadium(IV) oxide is then re-oxidised by the oxygen.

Vanadium(V) oxide is used in the preparation of vanadium alloys. It is an oxidizing agent, commonly used as a catalyst in contact process (production of sulfuric acid) to oxidize sulfur dioxide to sulfur trioxide. It is widely used as a host material for lithium-ion battery, sodium-ion battery, magnesium-ion battery and pseudocapacitors.
