At the start of the war, German soldiers wore the Feldgrau uniform. The German military introduced this field gray uniform in 1910. It replaced the old Prussian blue uniform.

The German Waffenrock (uniform) evolved a great deal to the Feldgrau (field grey) used in WWI. This was worn by most foot units and some cavalry units as well. Different ranks wore different types of these uniforms.
