The Panzerkampfwagen IV (Pz.Kpfw. IV), commonly known as the Panzer IV, is a German medium tank developed in the late 1930s and used extensively during the Second World War. Its ordnance inventory designation was Sd.Kfz. 161.

Production started in 1937 and continued until the very end of the Second World War. The Pz. IV became one of the most mass-produced Wehrmacht tanks, with 8,686 units built.

In 1944, the simplified Ausf.J, easier to produce, was introduced, sporting the longer L48 caliber and new AP ammunition, which helped the Panzer IV, still the most numerous of all German tanks, to keep the superiority over Russian tanks.

The Mark IV (pronounced Mark four) was a British tank of the First World War. Introduced in 1917, it benefited from significant developments of the Mark I tank (the intervening designs being small batches used for training).

IV was the only tank made by Germany throughout the course of the war, from 1939 to 1945. More than 8,000 Pz. IVs were built, making it the most numerous of all German tanks.

The Mark IV was the first tank to be produced and used en masse. Following the modest success of the Mark I tanks on the Somme in 1916 the British Commander-in-Chief, Sir Douglas Haig, ordered 1,000 more tanks for 1917.
