This is simply my method I follow after trial and error. I prefer to use longer wood screws and go directly into studs versus the anchor and screw kits most curtain rods come with. I’ve dealt with rods pulling out of walls one too many times. The pilot holes, while not necessary, did help my screws go in easier.
